Environmental Communications

Known as one of the premier environmental communications firms in the Rocky Mountain region, Sigler Communications has successfully managed communications, community relations and public involvement programs for dozens of environmental sites throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Our experience encompasses the continuum of services needed to develop and implement a successful communications program — from interviewing stakeholders for communications/community involvement plans to developing written materials to organizing public meetings.

Our team's knowledge of the regulatory arena, and common community concerns and issues, are extremely beneficial to our clients. Our programs include strategies to address health concerns, real estate impacts, land reuse and other issues specific to remediation sites. We are skilled risk communicators and experts in translating highly technical concepts to lay audiences, including multi-ethnic audiences.

We often work in team settings with environmental engineering firms, attorneys, regulators and others to provide the imperative communications link in the process. A well-informed community and satisfied stakeholders create a more effective and efficient remediation process.

Community Relations & Social Responsibility

Community relations requires two-way communications with key audiences, and in many cases, a commitment to incorporate stakeholder input into the decision-making process. Sigler Communications has planned and implemented dozens of successful community involvement programs across the country. Stakeholders are actively included in the process through community advisory boards, ongoing research, public meetings and other forums.

To assist companies and organizations in communicating their social responsibility programs and records, Sigler Communications researches and writes corporate social responsibility reports. Sigler works with companies to ensure reports follow social responsibility guidelines established by the international Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to report on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of their activities, products and services. The success of any communications program is dependent
upon the ability to set course and follow a well conceived plan-of-action. We assist in developing short and long-term plans, budgets and timelines. Regulatory Relations

Our team’s knowledge of the regulatory arena and common community concerns and issues aids our clients with their regulator relations. We bring a strong reputation in the regulatory community and positive pre-existing working relationships that help facilitate a bridge between our clients and regulators. Marion Galant, who recently joined our team, served as the public involvement/communications manager of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Hazardous Waste Division for 17 years. Our collective experience in dealing with NGOs,
special interest groups, and activists with varying agendas provides us with tools and techniques that have been used to successfully diffuse opposition.

In situations where clients need to interface with regulators on communication issues, we have a strong track record working with regulatory public information officers to ensure we reach common ground and agreement upon how to best communicate with stakeholders.

Media Relations & Publicity

Through our knowledge of the media market and relationships with reporters, specifically those covering the business and health beats, we are able to provide our clients valuable insight when reacting to inquiries or proactively placing a story. In addition to developing media advisories and news releases, we provide media training, message development and editorial board briefings.

Crisis Communications

Working on a number of high-profile projects in the healthcare, environment and education arenas contributed to our expertise in crisis communications. We develop crisis plans and programs designed to communicate with all stakeholders including employees, families, customers, shareholders, vendors, community members, elected officials, regulators and the news media in a timely and strategic manner.

Risk Communication

Risk communications involves effectively communicating about the risk itself, while taking into account the public outrage that accompanies it. It involves appropriately putting the risk into context for the public without trivializing or exaggerating the true
threat. Difficulties in risk communications arise when the public and scientists and regulators all have a different perception of what constitutes an actual risk. Sigler Communications has extensive expertise in communicating risk to employees, neighbors, the public and the news media. The firm has used a variety of methods to communicate risk including “exposure scenarios,” appropriate comparisons and statistics. We work closely with toxicologists to accurately communicate health related information. Graphics and other visual materials are developed to aid in the
communications.

Collateral Materials/Videos/Multi-media Presentations/Audio Visual Support

Strong writing skills and experience in graphic design and production management give our clients well-crafted, attractive and cost-effective communication pieces. In addition to printed pieces, such as newsletters, fact sheets, brochures and annual reports, we produce a wide variety of videos and other AV materials.

Our videos and multi-media presentations incorporate the latest advances in graphics and videography to compete with the highly professional images the public receives through the mass media on a daily basis. The public has grown increasingly discerning about the quality of video productions. We work with each client to develop the appropriate video concept, creative treatment and script. Expertise in design, production and videography allow us to craft professional presentations to fit any budget.

We also have expertise developing multi-media presentations that incorporate video, still photos, text and interactive components.

Real Estate Tracking/Communications

Questions about effects to property values are one of the key concerns of neighbors and communities that are affected by environmental contamination. Sigler Communications has developed a tracking system that allows companies to look at the impact to real estate and report that information to the community. Additional tools such as indemnification agreements for buyers, written materials and realtor outreach are used to help communicate information about property values.
